Reviving Cantonese Culture: Xiao Feng Yin Yue Greentown

Zhijun Zhong's Award-Winning Design Breathes Life into a Disappearing Culture

The project, located in Nansha, Guangzhou, was inspired by the local cultural background and the poetry of Wan Sui from the Ming Dynasty. Zhijun Zhong conducted extensive field investigations, immersing himself in the local customs and traditions. He then extracted elements deeply rooted in the city, such as reeds, silks, and fishing nets, and integrated them into the design. The result is a space that resonates with the human spirit and balances the relationship between urban development and natural ecology.

What sets Xiao Feng Yin Yue Greentown apart from other projects is its unique representation of the Cantonese water town scenery and fishing village culture. As the city developed, this once prevalent scene gradually disappeared. Zhijun Zhong, however, managed to recreate this old scene using a simple and natural design philosophy. He integrated elements of Chinese ink painting, silk, and lanterns into the space, creating an atmosphere that expresses the richness of Chinese culture.

The project was realized using natural materials such as marble, wood, and tree branches. Through fine processing and blending of art, Zhijun Zhong created a space that is surrounded by nature yet exudes exquisite design. The project, which spans 900 square meters, interprets the relationship between humans and nature, offering a peaceful, comfortable, and elegant living atmosphere.

The design project, which started in 2019 and was completed in September 2020, faced several challenges. The main difficulty was creating a design that meets the aesthetic and use needs of the times while maintaining harmony with the ecological nature. Zhijun Zhong overcame this by leaving a large proportion of the space blank, keeping the space simple, and integrating emotions into the design. This approach created a scenery and atmosphere that resonates with people and the space.

Xiao Feng Yin Yue Greentown's unique design and cultural significance have not gone unnoticed. The project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. It is a testament to Zhijun Zhong's remarkable skill and his ability to create designs that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
